Warnings and precautions

Before receiving Fosamax, inform your doctor if you have problems with swallowing, such as a narrowing of the esophagus. You should preliminary inform your doctor if you have esophageal ulcers or an esophageal disease; if you have a condition that causes low levels of calcium in the body; if you have any kidney disease; if you have stomach ulcers or other stomach or digestive problems. Inform your doctor if you are unable to stand or sit upright for at least 30 minutes. If you have any of the conditions, listed above, you may not be able to take Fosamax. In the case of any of these conditions you also may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during the treatment period.
Fosamax is assigned to the FDA pregnancy category C. This means that it is not known whether this drug will be harmful to a human fetus. Do not receive Fosamax without preliminary informing your doctor about your pregnancy. You should inform your doctor if you are currently pregnant or could become pregnant during treatment.
It is not known whether Fosamax passes into female breast milk. Do not receive Fosamax without preliminary informing your doctor if you are currently breast-feeding.

Possible Fosamax Side Effects

Stop receiving Fosamax if any of the following serious side effects occur: an allergic reaction (hives; laboured breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue or face).
Seek emergency help or contact your doctor immediately if you have any of the following symptoms: a difficulty or pain when swallowing; chest pain; pain in the back; pain or burning under the ribs; new or worsening heartburn.
Other, less serious side effects, are more likely to occur.
Continue to receive Fosamax and contact your doctor if you experience any of the following symptoms: abdominal discomfort; stomach upset, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or constipation; an altered sense of taste; muscle, bone or joint soreness or aches; headache; eye pain; a rash.
Other side effects, not listed above, may also occur. Contact your doctor about any side effect that is bothersome or seems unusual.
